On August 1994, a few individuals of social standing
in Kollam District of Kerala met together and decided to form
an organization for humanitarian services. They were particularly
moved by the pitiful condition of poor destitute patients in the
general ward of the Government District Hospital, Kollam.

Some of these patients come from various parts
of India. They were suffering all kinds of diseases like tuberculosis,
cancer, and aids. There were also accident victims suffering from
unhealed wounds for many years. A few of them were mental patients.
This complicated matters still worse. It was a pitiful sight to
see such patients lying on their beds in soiled clothes and unclean
body. It was here that the small group took a serious decision
to take care of such patients.

The hospital supplied a midday meal to poor patients.
They had nothing for the night. It was decided to raise money
to provide an evening meal to the patients. A place was hired,
a few utensils were brought and cooking of food started for about
100 patients. Soon the number swelled more collections, more volunteers
and more patients to care for!

On 22nd March 1996 seven of the founding members
coming from different walks of life formed the first board of
Trustees and got the S.S Samithi Registered as a public charitable
Trust with the Government.

S.S Samithi aims at providing food, shelter,
clothing medication and proper care for the sick, poor and destitute
irrespective of caste, colour or creed, region, language race
or religion. It also aims at the salvation of souls by strengthening
the spirit of man with the help of the Holy Spirit. Under the
auspices of the Samithi, a home was started in July 1998 at Mayyanad,
about 15 Kms from Kollam City for the destitute patients discharged
from the District hospital and other neglected, mentally retarded,
physically handicapped people wandering in the streets. Initially
the house could accommodate 30 people and the first batch of seven
inmates were given shelter and care.
