The number of poor patients we provide free meals daily
has swelled from 100 to 250 since August 1994 and it is increasing daily.
The Samithy cares for the patients who have to be looked after, like,
by cleaning their beds, giving them bath, providing clothes and supplying
free medicines.

The Samithy was confronting a serious problem in the
town with mental patients wandering through the street uncared for. Some
of them were treated at the local hospital but, being destitutes, they
returned to streets once again, this time more sick than before. The board
of Trustees gathering enough of inner strength, ventured into a difficult
task of sheltering and rehabilitating such patients. A property with two
buildings at Mayyanad in Kollam District was bought for the purpose and
16th August 1998 an institution for the mentally depressed persons was
inaugurated. Starting with seven male patients the number of inmates kept
going higher day by day. We have now 100 such patients both male &
female. With our love, care, diet and medical treatment most of the patients
show improvement. The patients who are cured completely are returned to
their home to the delight of their relatives. Shelter home is named
S S Samithy.

At the district hospital, Kollam, more than 250 poor
destitute patients are given food every day without fail. At Mayyanad
Abhayakendram, about 250 men, women and children of all age groups are
given shelter and proper care. Among them are the physically and mentally
handicapped, the deaf, dumb, blind, mentally retarded. Most of them were
wandering in public places. Their families or relatives left them to the
mercy of the streets and some of them wandered without any idea of their
personality or identity. When they regained their mental balance and are
physically fit, some of them revealed their true identity and passed on
enough information about their dear and near ones. Then from this 'home
away from home' we take them back to their first home.
